Sabie learner heads to Germany for cultural experience
Hoërskool Sybrand van Niekerk Grade 11 learner is experiencing his first international trip after being selected for an educational and cultural programme programme in Germany.
Hoërskool Sybrand van Niekerk Grade 11 learner Yandisa Mazibuko (18) was selected as one of 10 South Africans for an educational exchange in Germany.
The Sabie resident participated in the Development Education School Exchange initiative, with selection based on exemplary behaviour and a strong school record.
“I was fortunate enough to be one of the learners selected and I am proud of myself,” said Mazibuko.
He departed on September 23 for his first international journey.

Broadening horizons
Mazibuko described receiving his visa approval after a three-week wait as a relief following several sleepless nights.
“I was excited and relieved when I received the approval. It was such a special moment for me,” he said.
The programme aims to educate and inspire young people to take personal responsibility and actively work towards global justice. It provides learners with educational and cultural exposure by allowing them to experience life in another country, learn different traditions and see life from a new perspective.
Mazibuko said he had been looking forward to experiencing German culture, meeting new people and exploring places included in their programme.
“I can’t wait to see what life in Germany looks like, experience their architecture and try some of their local food,” he said.

He said that while waiting for his visa, approval delays dampened his excitement slightly.
Inspiration for the future
Mazibuko sees himself as a future AI software engineer and believes the trip will help him broaden his knowledge, build confidence and gain a deeper understanding of different cultures.
“I believe it will give me motivation to think bigger about my future. International exposure will give me a broader perspective on the field I want to pursue,” he said.
He encouraged other young people to take such opportunities seriously and work hard towards their goals.
“Sometimes an opportunity can open the door to many more,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to his family, teachers and everyone involved in making the programme possible for him.
