Mpumalanga teachers claim 10 top-3 places at 2026 National Teaching Awards

Education MEC Lindi Masina praised the province's award-winning educators for inspiring learners and communities after a stellar performance in Ekurhuleni.

Two Mpumalanga educators won national top honours at the 2026 National Teaching Awards at the Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre on October 1.

The province secured 10 top-three placements across almost all categories at the ceremony.

2 educators secure 1st place

Sibusisio Mkhonto of Ndzundza Mabhoko Secondary School claimed top spot for excellence in mathematics in further education and training, while Vusi Maseko of Hlanguphala Primary School won first place for excellence in life skills teaching.

4 teachers earn 2nd place

Four educators earned second-place awards across diverse teaching disciplines and leadership roles, including Thobela Mthimunye of Hlanguphala Primary School for Grade R teaching, Sinenhlanhla Sibutha of Elangwane Secondary School for physical science, Emannuel Tonga of Shakwaneng Primary School for technology-enhanced teaching and learning, and Elmon Jomo of KaMagugu Junior Secondary School for inclusive education leadership.

4 educators claim 3rd position

Rounding out the province’s performance were four educators who achieved third place in specialised teaching and school governance: Lungani Shabangu of Siyabonga Secondary School for secondary school leadership, Sphiwe Maseko of Thandanani Primary School for primary school leadership, Thabo Mazibuko of Makause Combined School for mathematics in general education and training, and Sibongile Sithole of Slindokuhle Special School for special needs teaching.\

MEC praises provincial champions

Education MEC Lindi Masina conveyed warm congratulations to the winners.

“To our champions, you have made Mpumalanga proud. Your success is not only a personal achievement, but a victory for every learner whose life you have touched, every colleague you have inspired and every community you serve,” she said.

“In you, we see the true meaning of excellence, resilience, and a deep love for teaching. Continue to shine and inspire the next generation.”
