Our View: It’s a’New Dawn’ for Mzansi

It's the era of the "new dawn" as the nation braces itself for a different set of rules in governance ever since the dawn of democratic rule in the country in 1994.

The country has a new president in Cyril Ramaphosa who was inaugurated on Saturday in Pretoria and at the same time, the province has a new premier in Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, the first female premier since 1994.

Ramaphosa has actively travelled the length and breadth of this country, selling his all-encompassing notion of being a true servant of the people through his Thuma Mina – Send Me rescue campaign.

He was able to reach out to South Africans during the elections as was reflected by the results. At the same time, he has given hope to the hopeless through his visibly decisive actions and shrewdness in enforcing an equitable livelihood for all.

What is also convincing for yours truly is the fact that he reflects the real personality as he’s described in his biography of being a caring person and deeply religious before being political – at his inauguration he requested Chief Justice Mogoeng to autograph his official Bible.

At that, yours truly was convinced that his childhood personality hasn’t changed and his characteristic of truly being a people’s person has surfaced.

I think this time around we’re fortunate that our president is a billionaire and is not desperate to loot state coffers. He’s a workaholic and all he’s requested from his colleagues and opposition parties is that they should work together for the betterment of the people.

Yes, indeed, he said he is president of all South Africans and expects all leaders to forget about being leaders of their own parties, but for all.

That’s hard to come by, but during these tough economic and political times infested by some corrupt leaders, we never expected that South Africa would have such a saint as Ramaphosa.
Let’s give him a chance to work his magic before judging him. Time will tell.
