CIT robbers killed during attempted heist

The incident occurred between Hazyview and Thulamahashe.

Two robbers armed with AK47s were recently killed during an attempted CIT heist near Hazyview.

According to national police spokesperson, Col Athlenda Mathe, a G4S cash van was driving toward Thulamahashe on the R40 when two vehicles, a Nissan Laurel and a Mercedes-Benz, appeared to be following it.

“The Nissan then rammed the escort vehicle accompanying the van, injuring the driver,” said Mathe.

His condition and which hospital he was taken to is not known at this stage.

“Gunfire then ensued during which two suspects were killed on the scene,” she said.

“Several empty cartridges, live rounds and an AK47 were found on the scene,” she said and added that no cash was taken.

“The remaining suspects managed to flee the scene and a manhunt has been launched,” she said.

“The SAPS is appealing to anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects to contact their nearest police station. We would also like to remind the public that it is a criminal offence to harbour a criminal,” she said.
