Delayed but determined: Safa Ehlanzeni U20 League to continue until mid-July

Grassroots football lovers can look forward to more action as the Safa Ehlanzeni U20 League continues until mid-July. While the league was expected to concluded by the first week of June, it was delayed by more than two weeks to accommodate the mid-year school examinations and the Safa Ehlanzeni D Licence Training in May.

The league has only recorded 20 games so far and anticipates more reschedules as the district’s 2025 Engen Knockout Challenge is set to start this weekend. This is according to the Safa Ehlanzeni U20 League co-ordinator, George Kgoale.

He explained that most of the players are in Grade 12, juggling soccer, classes and exams, while others are doing their first years at various tertiary institutions. However, most players are said to be doing well in their academics as reported by their coaches.

A Grade 12 pupil of St Mark’s International School, Innocent Machel, said he is not affected by the schedule of the games as he attends is extra classes on Saturdays and his games are usually on Sundays.

“Although I often feel very tired, especially on Mondays, I have to work hard to succeed in both my academics and my passion for soccer – and that’s exactly what I’m doing,” said Machel.

The mid-year exams concluded on June 27. Week 19 games were hosted at the Salubindza Sports Ground where Game United FC and Mataffin Hotspurs FC played a draw of 0-0 on Sunday, June 22.

Mpumalanga School of Excellence FC defeated Fortune Academy FC 3-0, while Barberton Academy FC suffered a loss of 2-1 against Idlabantu FC. The Engen Cup games will take place in Mbombela on Saturday, June 28, at two venues, Easthigh Sports Ground and Valencia Sports Complex for the men’s games, and Lowveld High School Sports Ground for the women’s games.
