14 passengers taken to hospital after bomb attack on bus in George

A public transport bus travelling on its route in one of the suburbs was petrol-bombed earlier this morning.

Emergency services transported 14 patients to hospitals in George this morning after a petrol bomb was thrown at a Go George bus in the suburb of Pacaltsdorp.

Information currently available suggest that at least four patients were transported by ER24 and the remaining patients were transported by metro and other emergency services.

The patients are still being assessed at the hospitals, but it seems that they mostly obtained superficial facial and body burns. According to a report by Go George, five of the patients have been treated for burn wounds and nine for shock.

The damage to the bus.

The motive for the attack is still unknown but it follows just a day after George Municipality announced that the Go George service rollout in Thembalethu is imminent.

“The SA Police Service is investigating the incident,” reads the report.

“The GIPTN [George Integrated Public Transport Network] regrets the incident and will assist the police with information and CCTV footage to bring the perpetrators to book,” says Go George manager MornĂ© Lakay.

The bus service in the area and all other routes remain fully operational.
