University of Zululand student stabbed to death in altercation over R70

A student was stabbed on campus after a fight broke out, allegedly about money that was owed.

A University of Zululand student allegedly stabbed another student to death following a fight over R70 owed to him at the Kwadlangezwa main campus in Richards Bay, KZN, over the weekend.

A student representative council (SRC) member also living in West Residence says the fight apparently began when one student spotted the other buying something from the store located inside the residence.

He says the man alleged to have stabbed the student asked why he had money to buy from the shop if he still owed him money.

“The pair began fighting, and that is when the suspect pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed the other student in the neck and in his thighs. He tried to run to the gate to ask security for help, but the wound on his neck was severe, and he died at the gate. Unfortunately, the paramedics and SAPS arrived when he had already succumbed to his wounds.”

“This is sad because there is no reason good enough for someone to kill another person,” he said.

According to the SRC member, the incident happened so fast that the security was unable to break up the fight.

He said it would not be fair to blame the security guards because both men are students and it was not a case of a perpetrator coming from outside to commit the crime.

SAPS

KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that Mtunzini Police are investigating the murder.

“The incident resulted in the death of a 22-year-old man, who was fatally stabbed by a suspect known to the deceased on June 10 at UniZulu West Residence. Reports indicate that the deceased sustained multiple injuries.”

The university communications director, Gninekile Nhleko-Mdluli, says she has already written a statement on the matter but is waiting for it to be approved.
