KZN pharmacy owner, teen murdered in separate shooting incidents
Police are appealing to the community to work with them to stop the senseless killings of innocent residents in Wentworth.
Fear, anger, and frustration have once again gripped the Wentworth community after two people were killed and one seriously injured in separate shooting incidents in Durban last week.
The community continues to grapple with gun violence due to the illicit drug trade and gang turf wars.
In the first incident, which occurred last Tuesday, a 17-year-old boy identified as Leyton Fynn was gunned down in full view of the public while on his way to attend extra lessons.
Police arrived at the scene at Richwardinn Road to find his lifeless body lying on the pavement as horrified residents gathered around the deceased.
Wentworth SAPS communications officer Captain Mbuso Gumede confirmed that a murder case is under investigation at the station.
“Wentworth Vispol officers attended the scene, and upon arrival, there was a group of community members gathered around the lifeless body of the pupil, aged 17. He was lying on the side of the pavement and was declared dead at the scene. The pupil was dressed in school uniform and was on his way to attend winter school classes at one of the high schools in the area,” said Gumede.
Reports indicate that Fynn was approached by an armed suspect who opened fire, fatally wounding him. It is alleged that the perpetrator then fled on foot into the park on Rooks Road and disappeared.
“Several empty cartridges were found at the scene and seized by police. The deceased sustained multiple body injuries,” he added.
The motive for the shooting is not known at this stage, however, police are following all possible leads. Even though the suspect is still at large, police are confident that an arrest is imminent.
In a separate incident, the owner of Austerville Pharmacy, Marhoom Ahmed Moosa (85), was shot and killed by a gang of gun-wielding criminals during a robbery at the pharmacy last Friday.
It is alleged that the suspects stormed the pharmacy and demanded cash. Shots were fired in the process, and Moosa was fatally wounded while a 35-year-old woman sustained serious injuries.
