Brilliant Banyana beat Italy to advance to last 16

It took until added time in the second half, but the South African women's soccer team secured victory and are through to the play-offs.

Banyana Banyana secured their first-ever Women’s World Cup victory after beating Italy in dramatic fashion earlier today to qualify for the Last 16.

Arianna Caruso gave the Italians an early lead before teammate Benedetta Orsi made a grave error in attempting to play the ball back to her keeper, only for it to roll back into her own net and level the score.

A 67th-minute goal from Hildah Magaia had Banyana up for the first time, but it was short-lived as Caruso scored her second of the evening.

Deep into stoppage time, Thembi Kgatlana scored the decisive goal that handed Banyana their first-ever World Cup victory and a spot in the play-offs.
