Video: 2 metro officers among 13 arrested for N12 truck hijacking

A sting operation resulted in the arrests, and firearms, police apparel, five sedans, a hijacked truck and a jamming device were recovered.

Two officers from Tshwane and Johannesburg Metro Police were arrested yesterday on the N12 highway near Kingsway Road along with 11 other suspects for truck hijacking.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, officers received information about a truck hijacking on the highway.

A team consisting of members from the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes, Tactical Response team, Middelburg Flying Squad, Johannesburg K9, CAP Specialised Unit and Fidelity Specialised Services strategically placed themselves on the N12.

“A convoy of vehicles with a truck with the same description given, was noticed. Operational takedown was executed and police arrested 13 suspects, seizing five sedan vehicles, two firearms, a jamming device and a hijacked truck with stock worth approximately R3 200 000.”

Police also found metro police apparel.

Nevhuhulwi said two of the vehicles were positively identified as stolen as per Olifantsfontein and Sebenza cases.

The suspects have been charged with truck hijacking, possession of unlicensed firearms, hijacked vehicles and jamming devices. “Police investigations continue as suspects may be linked to other cases,” said Nevhuhulwi.

Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela applauded the team for their tremendous job.

All suspects will appear in court soon.
