2 children lose their lives in informal settlement shack fire outside Roodepoort

An unattended candle reportedly led to the fire that affected 44 residences in Fleurhof, but investigations are underway.

Two children, believed to be between the ages of two and five, lost their lives and one woman sustained minor injuries and was treated for smoke inhalation in a fire at their informal settlement dwelling.

The woman was later transported to the nearest healthcare facility for further treatment.

According to Xolile Khumalo from the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services, the fire broke out in the early hours of yesterday morning in Fleurhof Ext 5 informal settlement outside Randfontein.

Khumalo says it caused damage to about 44 residences.

“At this stage, the cause of the fire incident is believed to be a candle which was left unattended,” concludes Khumalo.
