Watch: Mzansi Youth Choir heads to America’s Got Talent finale

SA's youth choir gets audience on its feet, securing finale spot in America's Got Talent later in September.

South Africa’s Mzansi Youth Choir’s rendition of Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac, performed on the America’s Got Talent live show on Tuesday, has secured them a spot in the 18th season finale alongside teenager Putri Ariani, who won Indonesia’s Got Talent when she was eight in 2014.

The choir made history in May when they got the first audience Golden Buzzer on this year’s show, singing Nightbirde’s It’s Ok as a tribute to the brave singer. Nightbirde earned a Golden Buzzer in 2021, after emotionally revealing that she had breast cancer and singing a song that captured her resilient spirit. It brought Simon Cowell to tears. She subsequently passed away at the age 31 in 2022. Her family was in the audience on Tuesday.

Despite a cancelled flight, the choir was filled with their trademark exuberance, and shone in white and gold dresses and suits. They received a standing ovation for their excellent performance. As Cowell said after their performance: “This act is spectacular. Your energy and just the way you perform, it draws you in. This stage can make or break you. Tonight, it made you.”

The finale is scheduled for September 26, with the final results being announced the next day.

The Mzansi Youth Choir was established to give talented, underprivileged youngsters the chance to showcase their gifts.
