Police intensify search for Pinetown double murder suspect
Law enforcement officers are searching for an alleged double murderer who is also wanted in connection with various cases of extortion.
KZN police have intensified their search for Linda Hlongwa, also known as ‘Mjinja’ or ‘Putin’, who is a suspect wanted in connection with the brutal murder of a mother and daughter in Pinetown, and a string of extortion cases.
Highway Mail reports that the police suspect he is behind the killing of his 22-year-old girlfriend and her 52-year-old mother, who were gunned down at their home on Income Road in Nazareth, Pinetown, on March 18.
“We are urging members of the public to come forward with any information that can lead to his arrest. He has been on the run for too long,” says KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.
According to the police, Hlongwa was arrested on July 20, 2020, after being found in possession of a firearm and ammunition on Ukuthula Street in St Wendolins, Mariannhill. He was released pending the outcome of ballistics tests but has since failed to appear in court.
Authorities say Hlongwa is also linked to a series of extortion cases, allegedly targeting businesspeople in and around Mariannhill. His name was officially circulated as wanted in September 2024, and a warrant of arrest was issued by the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on September 9, 2024.
Colonel Netshiunda adds: “We need to put a stop to his reign of terror. We urge anyone who knows where he is to speak up before more lives are lost.”
Anyone with information on Linda ‘Mjinja’ Hlongwa’s whereabouts is urged to contact Colonel Sikhakhane on 079 696 3546 or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
