Ermelo cop’s murder: 10 accused appear in court

Only one of the ten people accused of murdering a high-ranking policeman is out on bail to date.

The ten people accused of the murder of Ermelo Vehicle Investigation Unit commander, Lieutenant Colonel Piet Pretorius, appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court today.

The accused are former police official Mthobisi Nkosi (40), Aubrey Xaba (35), Skhumbuzo Skhakhane (40), Nyiko Mujovo (30), and Valencia Skhosana (35), along with Prince Gift Mdluli, Vusi Shabalala (43), Njabulo Zwane (26),Percy Duba (30) and Phetheni Duba (37).

Highvelder reports that nine of the accused were remanded in custody, and the case was postponed to June 25 for further investigation.

To date, Phetheni Duba (37) is the only accused who is out on bail.

Shabalala (43), Zwane (26) and Percy Duba (30) will reappear in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on April 17 for their bail application.

Major General Nico Gerber, the provincial head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, expressed satisfaction with the progress made in the case.

“The postponement will allow the investigating team to consolidate all necessary information so that justice is served for the fallen hero,” he says.
