Hawks raid suspended deputy national police commissioner’s home

A raid at the suspended deputy national police commissioner’s home marks a dramatic turn in the widening probe into alleged corruption and power struggles within South Africa’s top police ranks.

Heavily armed police officers searched the home of suspended deputy national police commissioner Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya yesterday afternoon, amid reports that his arrest was imminent.

The Witness reports that Sibiya’s imminent arrest is believed to be linked to allegations of defeating the ends of justice.

The development follows KZN police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s explosive allegations and testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where he accused certain police officials of corruption and collusion with criminal cartels seeking to capture the state.

A special police team was reportedly deployed to execute the arrest following internal investigations into the allegations.

Sibiya was placed on leave in July by national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola, after Mkhwanazi accused him of conspiring with alleged information peddler Brian Mogotsi and Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to disband KZN’s Political Killings Task Team.

While police were conducting the search at Sibiya’s home, Masemola was testifying at the SAPS Ad Hoc Committee in Parliament.

In a separate operation, the Special Investigating Unit raided the home of businessman Hongwani Maumele in Sandton, seizing luxury assets, including multimillion-rand Lamborghinis. Investigators arrived early in the morning, and by midday, the high-end vehicles were seen being loaded onto trucks. Maumele has been linked to alleged looting at Tembisa Hospital.
