Alexandra Taxi Association chairperson shot dead in Woodmead
The death of another taxi boss who celebrated an end to gun violence in September has sent shockwaves through the community.
Alexandra Taxi Association (ATA) chairperson Vusi Mayaba was shot and killed last night in Woodmead.
Alex News reports that unverified reports of a taxi-related shooting began circulating on social media, suggesting that a prominent leader of an association in Alex had been shot. The association’s secretary, Sibusiso Zwane, confirmed to Alex News that Mayaba was killed in a shooting incident in a parking lot.
“He passed away at the same time; you know where The Baron Restaurant is. It happened at the parking lot,” Zwane confirmed.
He said that while the chairperson usually travelled with bodyguards, at the time of the shooting, Mayaba was travelling alone.
Zwane said he received the news in the early hours of this morning. He said, according to reports, the incident happened around 22:00 last night.

He confirmed to Alex News that ATA leadership is yet to meet this morning.
Zwane also confirmed that two people fatally shot in Carlswald, Midrand, on Tuesday, were members of the association. However, he said they were not in leadership positions but were ordinary members.
Midrand Reporter previously reported that this drive-by shooting, which claimed their lives, occurred on the corner of New Road and Barnet Street.
This comes a month after the Armsta chairperson Molefe Moekeletsi was ambushed and killed in a hail of bullets in Marlboro on October 30.
In September, Mayaba and Moekeletsi were celebrating unity at an event meant to mark the end of gun violence in the Alexandra taxi industry. They were also instrumental in working with the City of Johannesburg to get taxi operators using the new Vaya route to surrender it, according to the city’s transport MMC Kenny Kunene.
Mayaba’s death has sent shockwaves throughout the community and the industry.
“We are saddened to hear about the killing of another taxi boss, Chairman of ATA and director of ABC, Vusi Mayaba. Mr Mayaba was shot last night in Woodmead as he was leaving a restaurant,” Kunene noted.
“We are very much concerned that there have been multiple murders that are taxi-related, including three taxi bosses in the City of Johannesburg, one in Soweto and two in Alex. This is too much.”
