Watch: Alberton man in coma finally back in SA after contracting meningitis in China
Divan Aucamp (25) has arrived at Netcare Alberton in a coma after a community-funded medical evacuation from China following a battle with meningitis.
The Alberton community has pulled off a miracle, raising the funds necessary to fly 25-year-old Divan Aucamp back to South African soil after he was left fighting for his life in a Chinese hospital. Divan, who remains in a coma, arrived at OR Tambo International Airport on May 7 following a complex medical evacuation.
What was intended to be an exciting career move to China in December turned into a nightmare for the Aucamp family when Divan was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis in February, reports the Alberton Record.
After months of heartbreak and relentless hope, the family’s prayers were answered when Divan was wheeled onto South African soil, surrounded by a specialised medical team including a doctor from Taiwan and nurses from Bangkok.

Meticulous planning for a critical transfer
Speaking to the Alberton Record, the family detailed the delicate planning required to bring Divan home safely. Given his fragile condition, a standard commercial flight was not an option.
Instead, a private medical space was secured on board the aircraft, allowing life-support systems to remain active and his condition to be monitored by specialists throughout the long-haul journey.
Seamless medical handover
A key component of the operation was the transition between international and local teams. Three specialised nurses flew into South Africa on May 4 to ensure a seamless handover from the Asian medical team.
Upon landing, Divan was immediately transferred to Netcare Alberton, where local specialists took over his care.
Family reflects on an emotional milestone
“I just kept on crying due to the happiness of seeing my son back in South Africa,” said his mother, Esthie Meadon. “Seeing him here at the heart of the town he grew up in made me so happy.”
According to the family, Divan has already shown small signs of movement during hospital visits. His aunt, Elsa Appelcryn, described the arrival as a mixture of relief and renewed hope.
“For months, we have been living with uncertainty. Now that he is here, he is in a familiar environment, closer to family, and that alone gives us strength,” she said.
A community-powered homecoming
The costly medical evacuation was made possible by an outpouring of support from the Alberton community. Recent fundraising initiatives, including an event at Alberton Crossing, generated the crucial funds needed for the flight and his ongoing intensive care.
From tragedy to the road to recovery
Divan’s ordeal began shortly after he moved to China to work as an au pair and English teacher. His condition deteriorated rapidly after the meningitis diagnosis, leading to a coma, emergency brain surgery, a stroke, and a lung collapse.
While his return marks a major milestone, the road to recovery remains long. Now under the care of specialists at Netcare Alberton, the family remains hopeful that being surrounded by loved ones will aid his healing.
“This is not the end of the journey, but it is a very important step forward,” Elsa said.
