Peet Viljoen’s bail bid delayed as wife Mel faces reported SARS action
A high-profile couple had a bleak Thursday both in and out of court.
Disbarred attorney Peet Viljoen’s bid for freedom hit a brick wall today (July 23), with his bail hearing in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Pretoria postponed to August 17.
The couple faced more bad news today when wife Mel was reportedly served with papers from SARS. The papers are believed to be tied to her Tammy Taylor franchise business dealings, with reports indicating an alleged tax debt of around R14m.
When approached for her comment, declined to comment on the matter, stating that ‘the focus must be on Peet’.
SARS had not responded to requests for comment by the time of publication.
Peet spent roughly 100 days in detention in the US after being accused of participating in an organised retail theft scheme. This was followed by another 37 days in South African custody.
He faces more than 400 counts of fraud, corruption, theft, forgery and uttering. The charges stem from allegations that 46 City of Johannesburg-owned properties, valued at R27m, were fraudulently sold in 2010.
