Three suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers were fatally wounded and another suspect was arrested following a shoot-out with police on the R80 highway north of Pretoria yesterday (September 28).

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the team acted on intelligence that the suspects were allegedly planning a CIT robbery, reports Pretoria Rekord.

“The multidisciplinary team comprising the SAPS Tactical Response Team, Anti-Gang Unit, Gauteng Traffic Airwing and private security companies through Business Against Crime South Africa was following up on intelligence information about suspects allegedly planning to commit a robbery,” she said.

The team spotted a white Hyundai H1 on the R80 and attempted to stop it using blue lights.

“The occupants allegedly opened fire on the police, who responded, resulting in three suspects being fatally wounded,” Nevhuhulwi said.

Firearms recovered

An AK-47 rifle and a 9mm pistol were recovered from the vehicle.

A fourth suspect, who police believe was working with the same group, was travelling in a Toyota Avanza and was arrested. He was found in possession of a 9mm pistol.

Forensic experts processed the scene for further evidence.

“The recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to establish whether they can be linked to other crimes,” Nevhuhulwi said.

Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing Major General Fred Kekana praised the multidisciplinary team for its efforts to disrupt CIT and cross-pavement robberies in the province.
