Over 200 inmates prepare to write 2026 matric exams

The Department of Correctional Services has recorded a 56.7% increase in the number of inmate matric candidates for the final exams.

A total of 268 inmates at correctional facilities across South Africa are preparing to write their 2026 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, which start on Tuesday (October 13) and will conclude on November 26, reports The Witness.

The candidates are enrolled at 18 correctional services schools nationwide, with the Department of Correctional Services saying all necessary arrangements are in place to support them throughout the examination period.

Substantial increase in candidate enrollment

The number of inmate matric candidates has increased by 56.7% compared with the 171 who wrote the examinations in 2025, a development the department says reflects its continued efforts to expand access to formal education in correctional facilities.

National Commissioner of Correctional Services Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale wished the candidates well, urging them to remain focused and confident as they prepare to write their final examinations.

“The long hours of studying, attending classes, engaging with educators and collaborating with your fellow inmates will be rewarded through your results.

“Remain disciplined, believe in your abilities and give your best throughout the examination period,” Thobakgale said.

Education forms core of rehabilitation strategy

The department said it regards education as a key part of rehabilitation and personal development, helping inmates improve their prospects of pursuing further studies, finding employment and reintegrating into society after their release.

Thobakgale also commended teachers, school principals and correctional services officials for their role in providing learning opportunities and supporting candidates throughout their studies.

“Your work makes a meaningful difference in the lives of those entrusted to our care. Continue the good work, knowing that your efforts are reflected in lives improved and transformed through education,” he said.

High pass rate benchmark targeted

The department recorded an overall pass rate of 94.4% in the 2025 NSC examinations and is hoping to see more of its correctional services schools achieve a 100% pass rate when the 2026 results are announced in January 2027.

Alongside formal education, the department continues to offer vocational training and other rehabilitation programmes aimed at equipping inmates with practical skills and improving their chances of successful reintegration into society.

The 2026 examinations are another opportunity for the department to assess its efforts to make education accessible to incarcerated people and support their development beyond their time in correctional facilities.
