KZN police tighten security amid protests
Police have arrested 30 suspects in KZN and Gauteng in connection with public violence and unlawful protest activity.
Against the backdrop of public unrest, KZN Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, Divisional Commissioners, National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (Natjoints) senior officials, and Deputy Provincial Commissioner Major General Phumelele Makhoba gave a briefing on intervention plans yesterday (October 10), reports Berea Mail.
“The co-ordinated operations and decisive interventions of the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure are yielding results, with law enforcement agencies making significant progress in containing violence, apprehending perpetrators and restoring stability in affected areas.
“Our deployments remain active and are being continuously adjusted in response to verified intelligence and evolving operational requirements,” said police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.
Netshiunda said that since Thursday (October 8), a total of 30 suspects had been arrested, comprising 25 in KZN and five in Gauteng, in connection with incidents associated with public violence and unlawful protest activity.
“The arrests relate to offences including public violence, malicious damage to property, illegal gathering, obstruction and resisting arrest, with further charges dependent on the outcome of investigations. Those arrested include individuals allegedly identified as ringleaders who threatened to disrupt planned sporting events in Durban,” Netshiunda added.
Suspects are expected to be processed through the criminal justice system, “and the National Prosecuting Authority will exercise its prosecutorial mandate in accordance with the law”.
The South African National Defence Force, Crime Intelligence, the State Security Agency, and other relevant intelligence structures continue to monitor developments.
