2-hour rescue saves injured tourist at Howick Falls
An injured tourist had to be carried to safety before being taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment.
A tourist was seriously injured following a fall during a bush walk at the Howick Falls Gorge in the KZN Midlands, prompting a complex two-hour rescue operation yesterday (25 April) reports The Witness.
Midlands EMS spokesperson Roland Robertson said Howick K9 rescue medics and Midlands EMS crews were dispatched to the scene after reports that a tourist had fallen.
“On arrival, it was found that a 67-year-old female had sustained a fall leaving her with serious injuries and requiring urgent medical attention,” Robertson said.
He said a multi-agency rescue team, including Netcare 911 Howick, SAPS and SAPS Search and Rescue, was established to assist in the operation.
“A coordinated joint effort was undertaken to stabilise the injured patient in a difficult to access area. Specialised rescue equipment was utilised to safely stabilise and extricate the patient from the path,” he said.
Robertson added that once stabilised, the woman was carefully carried to a waiting ambulance before being transported to a Level 1 trauma hospital for further treatment.
