2 pit bull attacks in Polokwane: Owner surrenders dogs to SPCA

One man spent a week in hospital while two girls (11) were attacked by dogs in the same area.

Two dog attacks in one day in Westernburg, Polokwane, have convinced the owner of the dogs believed to be involved, to hand them over to the SPCA. One of the victims spent a week in hospital with police investigating the matter.

The incidents happened two weeks ago. In the first incident, a man was attacked by two pit bulls. A bystander came to his rescue and managed to save him from the dogs.

The man spent a week in hospital recovering from his wounds and a criminal case was opened. Police told Polokwane Observer they are in the process of tracing the dogs’ owner.

It was since however established that two dogs were handed over to the SPCA. This was confirmed by manager Selma Landman.

It is alleged the dogs were taken to the SPCA after they attacked another man on the same day.

A man, who claimed to be the owner of the dogs, told the newspaper that he decided it was best to have the animals removed.

“Although I keep my dogs secure, when I am not at home, other members of the household sometimes leave the gates open,” he added.

Another incident, where two 11-year-old girls were attacked by dogs, was also reported in the same area.

Laws regulating dangerous dog breeds have been updated in recent times.

It is now mandatory for owners of certain breeds, such as pit bulls and boerboels, to have their dogs registered with the authorities and to comply with additional safety measures, including the use of muzzles in public places.

By not doing so, owners will face stricter penalties such as fines and even imprisonment.
