4 nabbed in Tshwane for alleged learner’s licence fraud

Two of the four were nabbed as they attempted to write the driving licence test for foreign nationals who were not present at the centre.

Four people were arrested at the Temba Driving Licence Testing Centre in Tshwane for allegedly selling fake eye test certificates and writing exams on behalf of learner driver applicants.

The arrests were made on Monday following a tip-off received by the Road Traffic Management Corporation’s (RTMC) Anti-Corruption Unit.

“A woman was conducting a makeshift eye testing business outside the licensing centre,” says RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane.

“She was allegedly found in possession of stamped eye certificates with the optometrist’s name and an eye test chart.”

Attempt to write the test on behalf of others

Zwane explains the other two suspects were arrested on allegations of attempting to write learner driving licence tests on behalf of applicants who were not at the centre.

“The two had learner licence test forms and traffic register numbers belonging to applicants from foreign countries on whose behalf they were to write the test.”

He says the fourth person is suspected to be the person who arranged the appointments on behalf of the applicants who were not at the centre.

Eleven eye test certificates, an optometrist’s stamp, an eye test chart and traffic register details belonging to foreign drivers were seized.

Zwane adds the suspects had been detained at the Temba Police Station and will appear in court soon.

The RTMC called on citizens to report suspected fraud, corruption and malfeasance to ntacu@rtmc.co.za or via WhatsApp on 083 293 7989.
