5 Soweto children die, allegedly after eating spaza snacks

A child was declared dead on arrival at a local clinic, while four others passed away while receiving treatment.

The community of Naledi, Soweto, is in shock following the death of five children in the area.

It is said the children, all under the age of 10, died yesterday after eating snacks, allegedly bought from a local spaza shop run by foreign nationals.

Local police spokesperson Constable Vusi Thokwan says five inquest dockets have been opened.

“Four children died while receiving treatment at a local clinic, and another was declared dead on arrival,” Thokwan adds.

He explains the children were playing together when they decided to buy snacks from a nearby spaza shop in the area.

“Detective Sergeant Baholo and Sergeant Nxumalo went to the shop to confiscate the goods,” Thokwan explained.
