Afrikaans rap artist Angie Oeh has died

The artist was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away in the Life Wilgers hospital in Pretoria.

The 24-year-old Afrikaans rap artist Angie Oeh from Oos Moot, Pretoria, has died after she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.

SA rocker Francois van Coke made the announcement this morning.

Her manager, Wynand Myburgh, confirmed the shocking news.

“Angelique Greeff, aka Angie Oeh, was admitted to Life Wilgers hospital in Pretoria on August 13 where she was pronounced dead at 17:24 on August 19.”

“She was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer on August 14 and after an emergency operation on August 15, she started chemotherapy the following Thursday.”

He said after the second chemotherapy session on Friday she began to struggle with low oxygen levels in her blood and was admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit.

“Everything possible was done to stabilise her, but unfortunately, things just didn’t get any better and her organs began to fail.”

Her girlfriend, Jolandri van Der Walt, mother, Peach van Pletzen, a friend and music collaborator and other family were with her in her last moments.

In 2022, she had a cancerous tumour, which measured 15cm in diameter, removed from her back.

A BackaBuddy campaign has been started to help raise money for Angie’s medical expenses.

To date, over R278 000 has been donated.

“Angie’s management team launched a Backabuddy campaign to help with all the medical costs. The support from people from all over was overwhelming, and the original goal of raising R250k was reached within 48 hours.”

“Many thanks to everyone who supported the Backabuddy campaign. There are still a lot of bills to be paid, but the overwhelming support also helped Angie a lot with her mood during her cancer battle.”

Myburgh also thanked the nursing staff at Life Wilgers, who looked after Angie so well in her last moments.

Angie started writing, producing, and releasing music independently in 2019.

But it wasn’t until December 2021, when she released her first Afrikaans song, Dis jou wyfie, that people became aware of her.

With Dis Jou Wyfie her sound was fresh and unique, and she was crowned as the first Afrikaans rap artist.

Angie’s music was not just beautiful tunes, it was also a vehicle for her to say what she had to say, to try to make people aware of issues and to try to change things.

“For the first time in a long time, there was something in Afrikaans that challenged people and the culture to grow.”

“As an openly gay woman, she wanted to promote women’s rights and also highlight how society discriminates against women, class and race.

“She was fearless in this mission and faced a lot of opposition for it, but that did not and would never stop her.”

She was a forerunner of the change that was yet to come in our society and for that she stood on the receiving end of a lot of hate.

Myburgh said at the beginning of 2022, Angie teamed up with musician-manager Wynand Myburgh a.k.a. Valkie van Coke (Fokofpolisiekar, Francois van Coke, Jack Parow and Tasché) and the team started working and to date they have released 12 songs, the most famous of which is Sex in Afrikaans.

She also did several collaborations with artists such as Biggy, Loufi, Van Pletzen and Jack Parow.

The most popular collaboration is Girls and Parties with Jack Parow.

She was busy working on new music with producers Kay Faith and Peach van Pletzen, as well as a feature on a song from Die Twaalf, although whether some of this music will see the light of day is not clear at the moment.

“Thank you to everyone who loved and supported Angie. You know who you are.”
