Alleged car thief killed in Mamelodi shootout
An alleged car thief was killed in a three-way shoot out with Altech Netstar investigators and Garstfontein police in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria, on Friday evening.
“We had been looking for this person for quite a while. He had stolen different cars and hurt a lot of people in the process. We had gotten information of his whereabouts and went to find him,” the investigator said.
The inspector said a stolen Range Rover Sport was found when he and police officers arrived at the suspect’s home in Pretoria East.
When the suspect left his home, police and Netstar investigators followed him all the way to Mamelodi, where he reportedly opened fire on them.
Police returned fire and a shot hit the radiator of the suspect’s car. The suspect then fled on foot and was wounded by a shot fired by one of the police officers.
The wounded suspect then allegedly entered a house and asked a resident to take him to hospital.
The resident then reportedly helped the suspect into the car, which was stopped by police and Netstar investigators, who assumed the suspect had stolen it.
“We then saw that the suspect was seriously injured and on the back seat. We phoned the ambulance services,” the investigator said.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann confirmed they had responded to the call just after 10pm and took a seriously wounded man to hospital, where the suspect later died.
It is thought the suspect had been planning a house robbery as items including gloves and a gun were found in the suspect’s possession.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Michael Mbewe said he could not confirm the incident.
Last November, a notorious hijacker was shot dead by a motorist who witnessed him allegedly hijacking another driver in Alexandra.
Two suspects, one armed with a firearm, reportedly approached a Polo Vivo driver at a traffic light during peak hour morning traffic and ordered the driver out of the car.

Another motorist, who had witnessed the hijacking, reportedly got out of his car and shouted at the suspects to stop.
The armed suspect then turned to aim his firearm at the shouting motorist, who then fired a shot, hitting the suspect’s upper body from behind.
