Alleged sword killer in court
The 16-year-old boy accused of murdering his grandmother with a sword last year is set to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court early next month.
His lawyer, Aadil Lambat, had previously said the boy was being assessed by a panel of experts ahead of the next court date.
At the time Lambat said no further press statements would be made by the family and later added that a psychological assessment of the teenager was not yet complete.
“We hope to wrap the assessment up by next Wednesday,” he said.
A sword that allegedly belonged to the boy was used to stab and kill his 76-year-old grandmother in their home in Roodepoort North, on Gauteng’s West Rand, in December last year.
The boy was arrested at a friend’s house in the Georginia area of Roodepoort later that day.
He was later admitted to Bosasa Youth Development Centre, which looks after youths in conflict with the law.
In a similar incident, a 19-year-old girl underwent mental evaluation after allegedly stabbing her grandmother in Phoenix, KwaZulu-Natal, earlier this month.
Neighbours of the family allegedly called emergency services after they saw the girl, believed to be mentally ill, exit her home with her hands and clothes covered in blood.
Emergency services allegedly arrived at the house, and they found the girl’s grandmother lying in her bed in a pool of blood.
The girl was arrested on the scene, and a case of attempted murder was investigated.
