ANC chairman survives shooting in KZN

A case of attempted murder has been opened after Ward 7 ANC branch chairperson, Albert Spar Nxumalo was shot and wounded at his home in Gcilima, in KwaZulu-Natal.

Police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said Nxumalo’s wife was preparing supper at their Nkamoini home last week when she heard gunshots. She rushed to the bedroom and found her husband had been shot, South Coast Herald reported.

“The gunman fired shots from outside the bedroom window and Nxumalo was struck three times in the right leg,” said Mfeka.

Nxumalo, 42, was taken to Gcilima Clinic and was later transferred to hospital. He was discharged earlier this week.

ANC regional spokesperson, Sipho Dlamalala said at this stage it could not be determined whether or not the shooting was politically motivated and was awaiting the outcome of the police investigation. No arrests have been made and investigations are continuing.

Nxumalo’s shooting was followed by the murder of Ward 10 ANC councillor, Mziwendoda Mzi Ncwane, 52, who was shot dead while watching television at his home in Maizeland, KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday.

Municipal spokesperson Zime Sithole-Gcaba said Ncwane was not only a councillor but also an Exco member and chief whip.

“We extend our condolences to the family, and we hope the law will take its course,” Sithole-Gcaba said.

Provincial police spokesperson Zwane said the motive for the killing was still unknown and Umzinto police were investigating a case of murder.
