Authorities warn about scams in Mpumalanga

Police in Secunda are looking for a syndicate believed to have scammed 5 000 people out of their heard earned cash while the municipality in Lydenburg has warned of scam artists illegally selling land.

Two scams, doing the rounds in Mpumalanga, have authorities warning residents not to part with their money before checking the credentials of those involved and pleading with those in possession of information about the guilty parties, to report them.

In Secunda, Ridge Times reports the Hawks are looking for a team of scammers who worked under the company name Mr Coin, offering victims sky-high return on investments.

The scammers, known as Sibusiso Mkhize, Ngwenya (unknown name), Charles Ndlovu, Sqelo Mahlangu (the mastermind mind and the boss of the group), and Keabetsi Dikobe went around recruiting Elukwatini residents and even made donations at local schools.

According to Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, spokesperson for the Hawks in Mpumalanga, the scammers held events where people won prizes in competitions. They were targeting professionals such as nurses, teachers and police officers, in an attempt to make people think they are legit. More than 5 000 victims fell into their trap.

Major-General Zodwa Mokoena requested the public to assist with information on the whereabouts of the suspects by contacting the investigating officer in this case, Capt Thembinkosi Nkambule on 082 303 9872.
