Bail for municipal worker accused of killing women with refuse truck

eMalahleni residents are frustrated in the little progress that has been made in the case that stems from an incident in 2021.

The case, where a municipal worker is accused of killing two women after allegedly hitting them with a refuse truck was postponed.

The accused, Oupa Mokoena, was set to stand trial on July 19 before the eMalahleni regional court.

Mokoena has made several court appearances and is out on R4 000 bail.

The incident happened on August 19, 2021, on the R554 road heading to Paxton Correctional Services.

Both victims, Ketshepileone Mgweemang (31) and Masichaba Lekgetho (35), were residents of Old Coronation.

The postponement came after the presiding magistrate resigned.

At one stage residents of Old Coronation marched to the police station to voice out their anger.

The residents have also demonstrated outside court every time the accused appeared in court.

They have on several occasions voiced their anger and frustration with the slow pace the proceedings have taken.

The trial has been set for November 3.
