Beitbridge Border Post officers arrested for corruption

A complainant alleges that two officers tried to solicit a bribe in return for a traffic register certificate.

Two police officers attached to the Beitbridge Border Post in Limpopo were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Unit on Monday after a trap was set and they were allegedly caught in possession of marked money used to pay a bribe.

The duo, aged 32 and 47, are said to have demanded R2 000 from a complainant in order to release his traffic register certificate. The certificate is issued to non-South African citizens who do not reside in the country permanently.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says the complainant contacted local police alerting them about the bribe and the matter was handed over for further investigation.

“An operation was conducted, and the two officers were arrested after receiving trap money that was found in their possession as well as the traffic register certificate,” Ledwaba says

Ledwaba warns that the SAPS in Limpopo do not tolerate any form of criminality, regardless of who the perpetrator is and says that the arrests are a testament to that.

The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe says her force has been working hard through Operation KuKula and that decisive steps will be taken against those who are caught committing crimes.

Ledwaba says the duo will make their first court appearance in the Musina Magistrate’s Court today.
