Benoni man critical after falling into nitrogen storage tank

A chemical manufacturing plant worker sustained chemical burns after he reportedly slipped and fell into the tank.

Advanced life support intervention was initiated by emergency care practitioners after a worker slipped and fell into a nitrogen storage tank on Tuesday.

Netcare 911 communications officer Shawn Herbst said at 12:18, their personnel responded to a burns case at a chemical manufacturing plant in Benoni on the East Rand.

Reports indicate that the worker slipped and fell into a nitrogen storage tank.

According to Herbst, co-workers who witnessed the man fall pulled him out of the tank.

“When paramedics arrived on scene, they found the patient, a 27-year-old male, in a critical condition with 40% chemical burns from the waist down.”

Advanced life support intervention was initiated in an attempt to stabilise him, Herbst added.

“Due to the time sensitive nature of the man’s injuries, a Netcare 911 helicopter air ambulance was activated to airlift the patient to a specialist medical facility for further treatment,” he concluded.
