Blacklisted teachers to be named and shamed
The names of blacklisted teachers will be published on the internet by the end of the year, the South African Council of Educators (SACE) said this week.
Chief executive Rej Brijraj said most of the blacklisted teachers had been found guilty of sexual harassment and corporal punishment, Rekord Centurion reported.
“The council have taken a decision to put [the names of the blacklisted teachers] on the internet, together with their identity numbers and the names of the schools they taught at,” he said.
Brijraj added the council was consulting legal opinion on whether or not the constitution allowed the naming of blacklisted teachers. Their offences, however, would not be made public.
“The blacklisted teachers come from all nine provinces. By the end of next year, the public will have a full list of those unethical teachers that will be struck off the roll,” he said.
“About 500 teachers were relieved from their duties in 2005 after they were found guilty of various offences.”
The offenders would either be struck off the roll for few years or be banned from the profession, he said.
