Boy, 12, to summit Kilimanjaro
Twelve-year-old Keanan Greyson plans on celebrating his 13th birthday in an unusual way – reaching the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The Laerskool Fairland grade 7 pupil, along with five family members are expected to start the climb on October 4, Northcliff Melville Times reported.
Greyson is climbing the mountain as a tribute to (Vriende van Fairland) Friends of Fairland, a school committee that aides underprivileged children, and as a gesture of gratitude towards Laerskool Fairland.
“The families do not get exposed. We also assist when children need doctors and we also provide therapy during school hours,” explained Leanie Taljaard from the committee.
The total cost of this journey, which Greyson started training for in April, was funded by his family and the school urged various companies to support this charitable cause by making donations.
“I am a very privileged child here in Fairland and I just want to give to other children that do not have that privilege,” he said.
Once he reaches top of Kilimanjaro, Greyson plans to hold up a banner displaying all the companies that contributed to making his dream a reality.
