Bus and service station set alight during protest

No arrests have been made after a bus and service station were burnt during a service delivery protest in Berea, outside KwaDukuza, in KwaZulu-Natal earlier this week.

Glendale police communications officer Sergeant Nhlaliyenza Mahlobo said residents were complaining about their RDP houses, which they claim are not in a good condition, North Coast Courier reported.

Residents blocked the P104 road during the protest on Monday. Ndwedwe municipality mayor Maxwell Hadebe said he was aware of the problem.

“We did get complaints about cracks in the walls and toilets being built on the wrong yards,” Hadebe added.

He said they contacted the human settlements department and were told maintenance for damaged RDP houses was no longer the government’s job.

“Our planning and housing manager spoke with the people and on Monday next week, a public meeting will be held. We will inform them on what measures we are going to take regarding their issue,” said Hadebe.

This after rush hour traffic in Durban was severely disrupted following three service delivery protests in the city last month.

One lane of the N2 highway northbound, near Cato Manor, was closed as police dispersed protesters. Several hundred residents from Durban’s Kennedy Road informal settlement closed Umgeni Road, while protesters from the Burlington Heights informal settlement protested, affecting traffic in and out of Shallcross.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed the protests on the N2 and Umgeni Road. “We can’t say how many [protesters there are] because they block the road and then run away to another place,” he said.
