Community chase, catch smash-and-grabber
A smash-and-grab robber was no match for community members when they managed to chase him down and hand him over to the police in Kempton Park, Gauteng, at the weekend.
According to Kempton Park police spokesperson Captain Jethro Mtshali, the suspect was caught by members of the community near the R25 and R21 on-ramp intersection, Kempton Expressreported.
“It is alleged that a female victim was driving her Opel Corsa when she pulled up at the intersection. While waiting for the robot to turn green, she heard the sound of a smashing window,” Mtshali said.
The suspect reached into her car, grabbed her handbag and cellphone and ran away.
“The victim saw a police vehicle and informed them of the incident. However the members of the community who allegedly witnessed the incident managed to get hold of the suspect and handed him over to the police,” Mtshali added.
The 32-year-old suspect will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court on robbery charges.
This comes after the emergence of CCTV footage showing a man stealing a backpack from a vehicle at The Grove Mall parking area in Pretoria.
