Tshwane Metro emergency services spokesperson Johan Pieterse said no one was injured in the fire.

“The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes,” said Pieterse.

The bus was moved to the side of the road to limit traffic disruptions.

In a separate incident, two women and three young children escaped harm when the car they were driving in spontaneously caught fire while driving on the N1 highway in Johannesburg, in December last year.

The driver of the car, Nicola Del Mistro, said she had just picked up her friend from Ferndale, and the five were on their way to the Booysens SPCA to have a cat put down.

But while driving on the N1 south between the Beyers Naude and 14th avenues’ off ramps, Del Mistro said she felt something was wrong.

“I could feel heat and when I looked down, I could see flames coming from the gearbox,” she said.

She promptly stopped the car and the two women evacuated the children to a safe distance, all unharmed, from where they could only watch as flames consumed the vehicle, said Johannesburg Metro Police Department officers.
