Cyclist killed by bus

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a 33-year-old cyclist was killed on Wednesday morning after he was knocked over by a bus in Kameeldrift, north of Pretoria.

Police spokesperson Constable Sam Shibambo said it was still unknown how the accident happened, Rekord North reported.

Shimbambo said the driver of a privately owned school bus and the pupils that had been in the bus at the time of the accident were still extremely traumatised during the preliminary investigation.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said the cyclist’s lifeless body had been found next to his bicycle around 7.30pm in Kameeldrif Road.

“Exact details on the cause of the accident are still unclear. Reports from the scene indicate that the man was cycling when he was knocked over by a passing bus.”

She said the cyclist had already died from extensive injuries by the time paramedics arrived at the scene.

Shibambo said a case of negligent and reckless driving was also being investigated.

In a separate incident, a man was killed on New Year’s Day when he was hit by a car while cycling in Fourways, in northern Johannesburg.

The cause of the accident was unclear, but the man succumbed to multiple injuries and fractures to his body.
