Dagga found at two high schools
More unannounced searches will be conducted throughout the year in schools around Benoni, Gauteng.
This comes after six packets of dagga were found during a school search at Petit High School and Crystal Park High School last Tuesday, Benoni City Times reported.
Five of the packets had been found at Petit High School, along with cigarettes and a small knife, police said.
Petit High School principal Marina Nortier said her school was working to eradicate illegal substances.
“We absolutely welcome these searches and follow up and assist learners with rehabilitation and disciplinary processes,” said Nortier.
Nortier added the pupil who had been found in possession of dagga would be sent with a referral letter to the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca).
One packet of dagga had been discovered in a bathroom at Crystal Park High School, police said.
The school’s principal, Frikkie Smith: “I am very happy that police do patrols at the schools, and that police and the schools can work together to get rid of drugs in schools.”
The search was conducted by Crystal Park police, the K-9 unit, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and community patrollers.
Crystal Park Police Station’s Sergeant Lerato Mopeli said the youth had been educated on the dangers of drug abuse.
In a separate incident, an ordinary railway patrol led to the discovery of a dagga plantation in Lewisham, Krugersdorp, last Monday.
It was believed Gauteng railway police had been going about their normal day-to-day patrols when they stumbled upon a large dagga plantation.
It was alleged the dagga plantation had been grown around the railway lines and then harvested and sold.
No arrests have been made.
