Owen Farrell will face a disciplinary panel on Tuesday, where it will be decided whether the England captain is banned and will miss the start of the World Cup.

He must appear before the panel next week after World Rugby announced it would appeal against the decision to overturn his red card for a dangerous tackle on Wales flanker Taine Basham last weekend.

The rugby world was stunned when an independent disciplinary panel overturned Farrell’s dismissal, and there has been widespread reaction from the likes of former referee Nigel Owens and even Owen’s father Andy, head coach of Ireland.

A Six Nations statement issued on Friday evening read: “England flyhalf Owen Farrell will attend an independent appeal hearing in relation to the independent disciplinary hearing decision dated Tuesday August 16.

“The player will attend a hearing via video conference before an independent judicial committee consisting of Nigel Hampton KC – Chair (New Zealand), joined by Shao-ing Wang (Singapore) and Donal Courtney (Ireland). The hearing will take place on Tuesday August 22nd.”
