De Allende relishing midfield challenge

Damian de Allende will have a new centre partner when he takes to the field against Argentina on Saturday.

Springbok centre Damian de Allende can’t wait to lock horns with Argentina alongside Jesse Kriel and the exciting halfback duo of Grant Williams and Manie Libbok.

De Allende and Lukhanyo Am have established themselves as the premier Bok midfield pairing in the last four seasons, and will be integral to Rassie Erasmus and Jacques Nienaber’s plans if the world champions want to defend their title in France this year.

The duo started their 28th Test side by side in a defeat by the All Blacks less than two weeks ago, but De Allende and Kriel will run out at 12 and 13, respectively, against Los Pumas on Saturday.

De Allende is thrilled about the opportunity to get his second run of 2023, and speaking to the media yesterday, the 31-year-old said: “I’m happy for Jesse. He’s been training well and he’s raring to go. Much like the rest of the team, I’m sure he’s looking forward to the challenge.”

“I [too] always look forward to the challenge, whether I’m playing with Jesse or Lukhanyo, or if I have to play at 13 and Andre [Esterhuizen] has to play at 12. I think the way the four of us put each other under pressure at training, and teach each other, goes a long way.”

The 70-cap De Allende is also keen to see what the talented young halfback pairing of Libbok and Williams bring to the game this weekend.

“It’s exciting to play with Manie and Grant,” he said. “They are electric, dynamic and skilful players, and I can’t wait to see how the game will play out with them taking control.”

The former DHL Stormers and Munster star, who now plays for the Saitama Wild Knights in Japan, also highlighted how the Bok coaches have managed the squad over the truncated Rugby Championship.

“You can train for a year and not play rugby [but] the only way you can get match fit is by playing consistently,” he added.

“It’s about trying to find that balance and getting everyone enough minutes so that when we start at the World Cup we can fire, not just as individuals, but as a whole squad.”
