‘Dead water’ discovered at Hennops River clean-up

“Sadly, but not surprisingly, no life was found in the Hennops water, it was completely black and dead.

Activists who are trying to keep the polluted Hennops River clean got their hands dirty again this weekend for World Clean-up Day, Pretoria Rekord reports.

On Saturday, Hennops Revival founder Tarryn Johnston and her team, together with various departments and organisations embarked on “the mother of all clean-ups” at the Hennops River.

On the day, 100 volunteers filled 400 bags of waste, estimated to be 6 tonnes, from the Hennops River near the Lewende Woord Centurion church.

The amount collected excludes the items brought on the day to be recycled.

The clean-up was kicked off with a fun run hosted by Run Walk for Life.

Johnston said they were also privileged to join forces with Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots, who conducted a Mini-Sass experiment to determine river health at #WorldCleanupDay2020.

“Sadly, but not surprisingly, no life was found in the Hennops water, it was completely black and dead.

“They, however, went through to Bronberrick spruit and collected samples which were full of life.”

Johnston explained the dissolved oxygen level in Bronberrick was 3.3 and Hennops 1.

“For the first time, we were able to recycle river plastic waste. This is very exciting,” Johnston said.

“This initiative was well supported by the people of Centurion. Recycling electronics, paper, plastic and glass. We also extend our thanks to the community who brought their recyclables on the day.”

Johnston thanked all who were involved including the water department and Tshwane metro for their support.

“We are blessed to have a strong relationship with the department of water and sanitation, the metro and Strategic Water Partners Network,” she said.

“Your partnership with Hennops Revival is so valued.”

Johnston thanked every volunteer who took time out of their lives to make this event happen so successfully.

“I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your dedication to the cause. May the love and joy that you bring to the water be multiplied infinitely,” Johnston said.
