Dog euthanised after suffering severe injuries
The dog that was apparently run over on Main Reef Road in Roodepoort, on the West Rand, has been euthanised at Roodekruin Animal Clinic.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the female dog was run over at about 6.20am yesterday and left on the side of the road in a critical condition, Roodepoort Record reported.
“Distressed bystanders ran to help the animal and flagged down an ambulance with a paramedic on his way to an emergency.
“The paramedic, Chandré Pretorius, trained in advanced life support, tried to explain he was in a rush. He called for another vehicle to tend to the emergency call and instead remained to assist the injured dog,” Botha added.
“They managed to contain the dog’s bleeding. They transported the critically injured dog to the Roodekruin Animal Clinic for specialised treatment,” Botha said.
After the paramedics examined the dog and taken X-rays, it was discovered the dog sustained severe injuries.
“We found the dog, believed to be around four-years-old, had sustained trauma injuries to her mammary glands,” Van Heerden told Roodepoort Record.
“She was in a terrible state and we stabilised her and put her on a drip. We also diagnosed her with Babesia infection, transmitted by ticks. After we took X-rays, we realised that she wasn’t feeling pain in her lower back and back legs, which could indicate that her spine was fractured.
“In such cases a full recovery is very rare, so we took the difficult decision to euthanise her, sad as it was,” he said.
In a separate incident, a six-month-old puppy was recovering after it was left for dead on the side of the road when the motorist who hit it drove off in Witbank, Mpumalanga, in June.
A witness, Ester Muller, said she was driving in May 29 when she saw the 4×4 vehicle hit the dog and heard the dog’s screams. She immediately turned around and found the dog lying alongside the road.

Dr Dawie Havelaar and his assistant Jantjie Tau tended to the Labrador cross. The pup was given an injection to minimise the pain and was also given a sedative later that day to prep her for the X-ray. The X-ray showed she had suffered from a pelvic and femur-neck fracture.
