Domestic dispute ‘arsonist’ dies

The man who set alight a house in Olievenhoutbosch, Centurion, during an alleged dispute, has died from burn wounds he suffered in the blaze.

Police spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto said a woman also died in the fire and five others were in a critical condition, Rekord Centurion reported.

He added a couple in the house had a heated argument on Sunday night, which led to the man locking the woman inside and pouring petrol over her before setting the house alight.

“The fire quickly spread to the neighbour’s house, as the structures were standing close together. A massive inferno engulfed both houses,” said Moloto.

A family of four inside the second house were burned and left critically injured by the fire.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said two children under the age of five were among those injured. The sixth family member, an adult, survived with moderate injuries.

Bodasing said fire and rescue services extinguished the fire and freed the family from the house.

“They (the family) were treated and transported to hospitals close by,” said Bodasing.

The man who started the fire died in hospital after he succumbed to his wounds. Moloto said an inquest docket was opened.
