Drunk driver ‘kills’ two

A man has been charged with culpable homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol after allegedly running over two pedestrians.

Ekurhuleni Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said the two were declared dead on the scene by paramedics following the incident on Sam Molela Drive in Esselen Park, Tembisa, on Saturday, Kempton Express reported.

Another person involved was critically injured in the crash and was taken to Tembisa Hospital.

Kgasago said: “The 42-year-old driver in a Citroën sedan was found to be under the influence of alcohol.”

He had then been arrested, Kgasago added.

Earlier this month, highly intensified operations by law enforcers adopting a no-nonsense approach to irresponsible drivers resulted in a total of 341 arrests in Ekurhuleni.

Of those, 211 were arrested for drinking and driving.

The arrests included a driver who was responsible for one of the 22 fatalities that occurred in Ekurhuleni from December 1 to January 1. The driver involved had also run over a pedestrian on a sidewalk in the Germiston CBD.

“The 22 persons who died included eight pedestrians, three motorcyclists, seven drivers and four passengers,” he said.

“The eight pedestrians included a seven-year-old girl [who was run] over in Tembisa and a female passenger who died on the N3 southbound near Leondale.”
