Durban metro police officer shot dead on M7

The killing of the officer follows another shooting in the province in which an e-hailing driver sustained gunshot wounds to his head.

A metro police officer has been killed in a shooting incident which occurred on the M7 Durban Bound at Hans Detman off-ramp.

Garrith Jamieson from ALS Paramedics says they were called to the scene just before 07:00.

“On assessment, it was discovered that the officer had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Unfortunately, there was nothing more paramedics could do for the man, and he was declared deceased,” adds Jamieson.

There are reports that the officer was killed after suspects hijacked the metro vehicle. It was reported that the vehicle was recovered on Stapleton Road, and that there is a second officer that was injured during this incident.

Man critical in another KZN shooting incident

The two shooting of the metro officer follows another shooting incident in KZN – on Walton Place in Umbilo – just after 16:00 yesterday.

Berea Mail reported that a man believed to be an e-hailing taxi driver was left in a critical condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to his head.

“One person, a man believed to be in his 40s, was found lying on the roadway with a gunshot wound to his head. The man was stabilised on the scene before being rushed through to a nearby Durban hospital for the urgent treatment that he required,” Jamieson told the publication at the time.

The events leading up to the shooting are unclear at this stage.
