East Rand warehouse destroyed in fire
The cause of the fire that gutted Superb Packaging warehouse in Sebenza, Kempton Park, on the East Rand, today remains unknown.
By late morning firefighters were still on the scene trying to extinguish the fire, Kempton Express reported.
Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson, William Ntladi, said: “Our security guard that works with the alarm inside the warehouse said the alarm went off just after 4am. He came out to see what was going on and saw the fire. He immediately called his colleague.”
One of the warehouse owners, Deon O’Connor said: “When we arrived at the scene, the warehouse was already on fire and not much of it was left. We then called the fire department.”
Ntladi added there was also a truck on fire that they needed to contain and it was very risky for us to go in because the structure had already started to crack.
The damage caused by the fire has not yet been assessed.
Sebenza police spokesperson Constable Sharon Tshotshotsho said no injuries have been reported and a case of arson was being investigated.
Last month, a fire broke out at the Transnet Elandsfontein depot in Isando, Kempton Park.
The fire resulted in the R21 and R24 being closed for traffic as a result of heavy smoke.
Flights to and from OR Tambo International Airport were also delayed by the blaze.
