Elderly man guns down would-be robber

A suspected house robber was shot and killed in a house in Annlin, north of Pretoria, after he attacked an elderly couple with a panga in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

According to police spokesperson Mirna von Benecke, the suspect gained entry into the house of an elderly couple, but was spotted by the woman who called to her husband for help, Rekord North reported.

“It is alleged that the suspect attempted to confront the lady but was intercepted by the lady’s husband. The suspect attacked the [husband] with a panga which belonged to the complainant and had apparently been in the garage,” von Benecke said.

The man then defended himself and shot and fatally wounded the suspect.

Police found the couple’s domestic worker’s cell phone in the intruder’s possession, von Benecke said.

“The identity and age of the intruder is unknown as he had no identification on him.”

A case of house robbery is being investigated and an inquest docket was also opened at the Sinoville police station.

Last month, an elderly man shot and killed a house robber in in the Allen Grove area of Kempton Park.

It is believed the suspect and his alleged accomplices had just robbed the man and his wife in their home before tying them up.

As the suspects left the house, the elderly man managed to free himself, got his firearm and fatally wounded one of the suspects.
