Equatorial Guinea hostage back home
Daniël Janse van Rensburg arrived back in George last night after having been held hostage and imprisoned in Equatorial Guinea for about two years.
Van Rensburg arrived in the country after spending anxious hours at the Malebo Airport. He was escorted from the South African Embassy, where he has been in hiding since henchmen allegedly threatened his safety when he tried to leave the country on Heritage Day, 24 September, George Herald reported.
Van Rensburg, was imprisoned in a notorious jail in Equatorial Guinea since September 2013.
Daniel was held in Black Beach Prison after an aircraft brokering deal with thepresident’s brother-in-law, Gabriel Mba Angabie, turned sour.
Angabi reportedly demanded R1 million for Daniel’s release, but it is not known if this money was paid.
Angabie had allegedly reneged on several conditions of the contract and ordered Daniel’s arrest during September 2013.
Although courts in the country found Daniel not guilty of any wrongdoing, Angabie refused to release Daniel unless R1-million was paid directly to him.
Vice Consul from South Africa, Kgopotso John stayed at Van Rensburg side from the moment he left the embassy until the time that he was safely buckled in his seat on the plane.
“Madam John is an absolutely fantastic person, a blessing from God,” said van Rensburg.
Van Rensburg is expected to spend time with his mother, Martha, before heading to his Hoekwil home.
His family were ecstatic when the news of his safety reached them.
The family asks that their privacy be respected while they enjoy spending time with Daniel after his imprisonment for the past two years.
